The need for a license really depends on the work types you plan on doing. Specific license such as ones for electrical or HVAC require written exams and a fee. You could look at just carrying a minimum insurance policy and make your new buisness an LLC (Limited Liability Corperation). This is generally the way most contractors go. It gives you basic coverage for your work, workers, and can even cover the location your working at for liable damages caused by you or someone within your company. I would contact an insurance agent and ask about an LLC policy. Really, all you need to worry about is coverng yourself with a policy that will protect you from damages, injuries, or someone that may end up not liking the work you completed and pursue it further within the courts. As far as a license goes, check on a General Contractors license or Remodeling License. There may be certain requirements by whatever county you live in so check with your local Building Enforcement Office and explain to them that you plan on just doing general remodeling, ie floors, walls, paint etc. and that you ARE NOT going to be doing any speciality work, ie HVAC, electrical, etc. and is a license even required by local codes to do this type of work. I would SERIOUSLY look at an LLC policy. This policy would cover your beloved rear end from being held liable for a number of things. It’s easier to pay for an insurance policy than end up paying for a hospital bill or lawsuit STRAIGHT OUT OF YOUR OWN POCKET. Good luck with your future buisness, hope it’s profitable for you.
